Rethinking How We Learn: From Sit and Get to Go and Show

Published on 2 November 2025 at 10:51

The Inspiration

The inspiration for this project comes from my daily experience working with faculty and fellows in our Hematology and Oncology Fellowship Program. We are surrounded by brilliant clinicians and researchers, yet our approaches to professional learning often fail to reflect that same spirit of innovation.

While our research continues to move forward and remain on the cutting edge, our education models have largely stayed the same. I wanted to challenge the traditional “sit-and-get” model that still dominates much of academic medicine and instead design a vision for professional learning that mirrors how physicians actually learn—through reflection, collaboration, and application.

The Motivation

The motivation behind this project is both professional and deeply personal. I’ve seen firsthand how busy faculty struggle to translate new teaching strategies into practice when learning experiences are too brief or disconnected from their daily work.

This project gave me a chance to reimagine what professional learning could look like if it were continuous, contextual, and empowering.

The Urgency

My goal was to make the why urgent by highlighting what’s truly at stake—lost engagement, burnout, missed opportunities for innovation, and ultimately, patient outcomes.

My mom has been a patient for more than 20 years, and she is here today because of the innovations we’ve made in cancer care. That’s why this work matters. We must continue to lead—not only in research and treatment, but in how we teach, learn, and grow together.
