About Me

Hey y’all! I’m Kary Garnica, and I live just outside of Houston. I’m a proud (and very busy) mom to a 16-year-old daughter, plus 15 dogs, a cat, and a rabbit. Yep, it’s a zoo over here, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Most of my time is spent running around with my daughter and all her activities. She plays softball, and we also coach a 10U team together—keeps us both on the go! We’ve also recently jumped into the world of FFA. It’s new for us, but we’re learning as we go. Our mini lop rabbit is part of that adventure—she’s for breeding, not meat, so we always say, “She’s a breeder, not an eater.”

I’m lucky to have an awesome husband who’s right there with us for all the chaos and fun—he’s the glue that holds our wild little crew together. And I can’t forget my amazing mom, who lives with us and helps keep everything running smoothly. She’s always ready to lend a hand, share a laugh, or spoil my daughter and fur babies just a little too much!

Now, out of our whole furry crew, my dog Lola has a special place in my heart—she’s truly my soulmate in dog form.  She was rescued at 5 years old after being used a breading day.  She’s been with me through it all and just gets me like no one else can.  I think my first Lab, Max, sent her to me!  She is a Cholate Lab, with yellow highlights.  She is as special as they come, just like Max was.

When we’re not at the ballfields or feeding animals, you’ll probably find us watching Astros baseball or planning a beach trip. I absolutely love being near the ocean—sun, sand, and salty air are my happy place.

I am deeply saddened by the impact of the recent floods in the Texas Hill Country. I am praying for the safety,

resilience, and recovery of all affected.

Me at work

For the past 15 years, I’ve had the privilege of working at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Graduate Medical Education. During this time, I've helped run the largest Hematology/Oncology fellowship program in the country, and I’ve witnessed firsthand how medical education continues to evolve.

Over the years, I've seen shifts in how we approach learning, training, and mentoring—but none as significant as the changes brought on by COVID-19. The pandemic challenged long-held assumptions and pushed us to reimagine the ways we support and educate our learners.

These challenges sparked a deep commitment in me: to not just adapt, but to actively shape the future of medical education. As I pursue my graduate studies, I'm gaining new insights, tools, and strategies that I plan to bring back to my work—ensuring that our fellows don’t just keep up with change, but thrive through it.

This space is where I’ll reflect on what I’m learning, share insights from my journey, and explore how we can continue to elevate the learner experience in medical education.

Let’s innovate how we teach—together.
