I’m not the type of person that can easily talk about myself or my accomplishments. I’ve never liked the idea of drawing attention to myself, because I don’t want to appear arrogant. There was an anonymous quote that I once read that has stuck with me! “If you have something to brag about, you don’t have to. Other people will do it for you”. I’m a firm believer that true accomplishments will speak for themselves. I am not conceited by any means, but when I have a job to do, I feel confident enough in my ability to know I will get it done. There is a big difference in confidence and conceit.
I now understand how and why ePortfolios can play a major role in professional growth as well as personal. As I work towards my degree, I will use my ePortfolio to see my progress. I’m still not to the ‘completely comfortable’ stage with it and have difficulty deciding what I should or what I want to post! Again, that goes back to me, not wanting to be all “goodie two shoes”! I do have additional workshops and conferences that I can add. I want to learn more and I’m always up for whatever it takes to stay on top of things. I know that book learning is just a small part of the bigger picture. To be well rounded as an employee and in my personal life, I need to reflect more on my hobbies, volunteer services in which I’ve participated, my outside interests, family members and really, all factors involving me, myself and I! In my down time, I hope to experiment more with my ePortfolio. I feel I have much more to add, to share and to show the real me. My ePortfolio is like my voice because it does the talking for me. Everything posted is mine: my words, my thoughts, and my own personal journey, all posted by me for me! Not one person will ever know everything that’s out there to be learned or taught. We must stay current with the technology and the needs of todays’ digital world. I would like to share my journey with those I might help. I already know my ePortfolio wont interest everyone, but if I can make a difference, then I’m all for it. At some point, in the future, I’d like to go back and revisit my ePortfolio to see how well I managed to stay on track. The passing of time allows for experiences, shifting of perspectives, and the decay and growth of all things, which contributes to change. In reality, time does change everything, so I hope to be motivated enough to change as needed too. The ePortfolio, hopefully, will allow me to see personal growth and change. I’d like to say the best is yet to come, each time I sign on!
I plan to share this information with the fellows at my hospital as well as my department. Being in the medical field, I think past experiences can benefit our new fellows tremendously. I want them to live and learn with purpose. These new fellows are finding their own passion, and I want them to keep moving forward. I’m trying as hard as I can to create my own destiny. If I can help them in any way to believe, achieve, and then do it again and again, I will have succeeded.
This is confidence, not conceit. I know my weaknesses and hope to work on those as I continue this journey called life. As the late, great, fiddle playing, country singer, Charlie Daniels once said, “Confidence, is the quiet assurance that you’re capable. Conceit, is the bold proclamation that you’re insecure.” Today, so much focus is on self-importance, I sincerely hope this does not diminish the importance of having confidence. The ePortfolio journey was a little rough in the beginning, but I think it was the newness that scared me. It has certainly helped me understand the “I can, and I will” theory! Taking advice from others, and just listening to their stories, as they muddle through life, I realize we all have more in common than we think. We are all just trying to make it through life itself. The importance of the ePortfolio and making it widely available is necessary. We just never knew how important they could be, until now.
